Ben Smith is a CrossFit veteran who started CrossFit in his 20s. Since 2009, he has been a participant in all games and has achieved multiple ranks in ten consecutive years. He won the Fittest Man on Earth title in 2015 after seven years' dedication. Smith was always in the top ten at regionals throughout his seven-year pursuit to win this title. In fact, Smith even won two events.

Aerobic fitness, however, refers to the continuous practice of low-intensity aerobic exercise. The primary source of energy for aerobic exercise is oxygen. In other terms, the aerobic pathway has more energy that the anaerobic.

To run a marathon you need to first increase your aerobic capacity. If you don't focus on increasing your aerobic capacity, you will not be able finish the race.

Aerobic fitness is also known as cardiovascular fitness. The two most commonly used methods of measuring cardiovascular fitness, are VO2 Max testing and step tests.

Tests for VO2 Max

The maximum amount of oxygen (O2) the body can use during exercise is called VO2 max. This test determines how much O2 your body can use during exercise.

This test measures cardiovascular fitness in a way that is most accurate. However, it requires expensive equipment and highly trained professionals to administer the test.

Step Tests

Step tests can be used to assess cardiovascular fitness. They are easy and effective. These tests require you to walk or run on a track or treadmill for a set amount of time, depending on your weight and age.

These tests can be conducted almost anywhere and are cheap, simple, and easy. You could, for instance, run on a treadmill for two minutes, rest for one minute, and then go back to the starting point for 20 minutes. Your heart rate should remain within a specific range throughout the whole session.

This protocol is called the "Bruce Protocol". Bruce, himself a runner, created this protocol after realizing that he would not feel his heart rate increase when running longer distances.
